June 2021 Community Meeting Recap

Administration

  1. Attendance to be taken via an online form (link in chat) so recordkeeping is more accurate and less time consuming.

  2. Moving to Google Meets instead of Zoom beginning in July (same format as Zoom and free with our Google account.)

  3. Moving to Google Groups instead of MailChimp (e-blast) - has potential for more targeted emails, ability to add yourself to specific committee groups and workspace for questions, tasks and requests)

Guest Speaker

Transportation and Parking Committee Presentation - Kurt Schiller, with assistance by Lynnie Moad.

  • Results of T&P Committee’s survey on Art in the Right of Way for traffic calming

  • Discussed steps needed to proceed.

  • Vote: To support (or not) the continuation of exploring traffic calming measures; vote passed.

Committee Reports

Beautification

Lisa Knickmeyer/Mallory Kuehn—beautification@upperfellspoint.org

  • Lisa stepping down as chair (personal reasons); Mallory to take over as new chair in July.

  • If you want a tree in front of your house:

    • Must water it

    • Complete/return request form by 6/30 (to be planted in the fall by the UFPIA/residents)

    • If you want tree bed fencing, it is available but at your expense

    • Contact beautification@upperfellspoint.org on both.

  • Mosaic tree bed medallions project completed.

  • Monthly cleanups moved to Tuesday through summer to include social afterwards:

    • July 13-Food Social

    • August 10-Happy Hour Heaven

    • Sept. 14-Spirits Tavern

  • Ooze tubes available for watering trees

  • Reminder to water a street tree near you when there is no rain.

Community Garden

  • June is National Pollinator Month

    • Major decline in pollinators due to food/habitat loss and use of pesticides.

    • Everyone was urged to plant flowers high in pollen/nectar (their food)

    • Best ones are purple coneflower, cosmos, zinnias, alyssum; see our website for more at https://www.upperfellspoint.org/news/garden-2021

  • Honey Happy Hour will be held at the garden on August 21; all are invited to attend; details next month.

  • Still have notecards and beeswax candles for sale and free dawn-to-dusk lightbulbs; visit the UFPIA online store

  • Route delivery person needed for west side of S Washington from E Lombard to Eastern; Erik agreed to take over route.

  • Support all of our sponsors - their ads help pay for printing our newsletters.

  • Deadline for the July newsletter - 7/5 at 5pm.

Education

Mollie Fein

  • Julie Community Center - collecting canned food for needy families.

  • Wolfe St. Academy - back at 100% in-person learning in the fall; they also need 2 soccer coaches.

Fund-raising

  • Looking for volunteers to work on small fund-raising projects

  • If interested in coordinating an event, contact Bill.

Land-Use

Jeff May

  • 205 S Chapel - Zoning hearing was postponed.

  • Need volunteers for subcommittee to rewrite guidelines

Safety

  • If interested in cafe lighting on your block, contact Matt

  • National Night Out - August 3; 7-9pm at the corner of 300 block of S Chapel and 1900 block of Bank; drinks and refreshments TBD; raffles and children’s activities are being planned.

NEW BUSINESS

  • Suzanne: Interest in heading a combo-neighborhood event and starting a UFPIA Anti-Racism group (requested time next month to discuss)

  • Mollie: Will work toward collaboration with Butcher’s Hill for a Collab Chalk Night
