June 2023 Community Meeting Recap

Virtual Meeting

Welcome/Introductions

Thanks to our volunteers who cleaned the streets to celebrate Juneteenth before our meeting. (Note: Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US.)

Guest Speakers

  • Joshua Espinoza, UFPIA Land-Use Committee, presented a proposed Land-Use Rubric on behalf of the Land-Use Committee. After discussion, there was a vote (details on vote below).

  • Wendy Bozel, UFPIA President, and attorney Thiru Vignarajah discussed the safety concerns of the new BGE gas regulators. (BGE has threatened to discontinue service if residents refuse new, external regulators.)

 Votes

Motion: To adopt the proposed Land-Use Rubric as presented by the Land-Use Committee and to grant the Committee the ability to write a letter according to the score resulting from the Rubric; motion passed.

 

Officer Reports

Treasurer: The Billie Holiday Bebop Dinner raised $1,700; thanks to everyone who participated.

Beautification

Mallory Kuehn—beautification@upperfellspoint.org

  • Another dumpster was filled at the June Dumpster Day/Cleanup; $70 was raised from the scrap metals which were recycled (proceeds to the Beautification Committee).

  • Everyone was reminded to water a tree near you if there is no rain (Note: Each tree needs at least 5 gallons of water for every inch in diameter of the trunk on a weekly basis and twice a week if it is a small or newly planted tree.)

Community Garden

  • A Honey Happy Hour will be held at the garden on August 19th from 4-6pm. There will be food, beverages, a raffle and a guest speaker.

Education

Land-Use

  • A draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sweet Carolina Liquors was discussed. We will continue the discussion at our July meeting and there may be a vote.

Safety (sub-committee)

  • If you are interested in having café lighting installed on your block, contact Wendy at president@upperfellspoint.org.)

  • Amy Zemanick, UFPIA Secretary’s presentation of the results of the UFPIA’s Safety Survey was postponed and will be presented at our July meeting.

Traffic & Parking

  • Approval of the art work for the ROWArt project was granted. We are waiting for BGE to finish the impacted streets so hope to work on the installation in early to mid fall.

To vote on issues at a meeting, you must have paid your current dues (based on calendar year beginning in January), attended 2 of the preceding 11 meetings, live in our boundaries and be age 18 and/or attended UFPIA sponsored events/activities per our Meeting & Voting Regulations.
