The Cicadas Are Coming!

The first cicada sculpture has been installed at the Upper Fell’s Point Community Garden. Cicada #34 was named Billie C. in honor of Billie Holiday who used to live around the corner (200 block of S Durham) when she was age 10 and for the emergence of Maryland’s Brood-X 17-year cicada.

Cicadas have been around for millions of years and are a large insect with big eyes. When they emerge from the ground they only live for about 4-6 weeks. The male makes a loud shrill droning noise to attract females. Cicadas mainly feed on the sap of tree roots and woody plants. They are harmless to humans and pets and usually to large trees but sometimes their egg laying can harm small young trees. They are great food for birds, rodents, etc.

Kurt W. Schiller is the artist and a long-time resident and active participant in the Upper Fell’s Point Improvement Association. For more information about the art project click here.
